Bacta Gears Up for Battle Against Gambling Commission’s Controversial Proposals
The gaming world is bracing for a showdown as Bacta Fights to Save Reel-Based Slot Machines from Extinction against the Gambling Commission’s latest plans that could dramatically reshape the industry. These proposals could see countless gaming machines deemed illegal unless costly software updates are made—leaving many operators fearing for their survival.
Bacta, the voice of the UK’s amusement and gaming machine operators, isn’t taking this threat lightly. In a move that could define the future of the industry, the trade association has delivered a powerful rebuttal to the Commission, supported by a tidal wave of input from its members. Bacta President John Bollom didn’t mince words, saying, “I am shocked and personally disappointed by the Commission’s approach. These proposals could spell disaster for operators, big and small.”
At the start of the year, Bacta worked closely with the Bingo Association to propose a series of changes to the Technical Standards, in response to the Commission’s request. But Bollom believes their recommendations have been cast aside in favour of much harsher regulations. Among the most contentious proposals are stricter limit-setting, mandatory time-out features, and the introduction of new rules that would hit all Category B machines—potentially wiping out older models that can’t handle the necessary software upgrades.
A Devastating Blow to Operators? The stakes are high. For many operators, especially smaller ones, these updates could be financially crippling—or simply impossible. "There are machines out there that just can't be updated to meet these changes," Bollom warns. The result? Operators might be forced to pull the plug on their businesses altogether, a scenario that could shake the industry to its core.
But it’s not over yet. Bollom reassures members that while the Commission's proposals are currently at a pre-consultation stage, Bacta will continue fighting tooth and nail. “We are far from the finish line,” he says. “There will be a formal consultation, and Bacta will be front and centre, making sure the voices of our members are heard loud and clear.”
With livelihoods on the line, Bacta is gearing up for what could be its most crucial fight yet. As Bollom boldly states, “We’ve never faced a challenge like this, and we’re prepared to go all the way in opposing these damaging changes.”
The Road Ahead This isn’t just about machines—this is about the future of the entire industry. Bacta has vowed to protect its members with evidence-backed arguments that cut through the noise. The battle for fair, reasonable regulations is just beginning, and Bacta is leading the charge.
Bacta is basically run by the directors of Merkur of Admiral, they’re not going to be arsed at all if reel based machines are banned, there’s a handful of independent operators with voices there, but let’s face it this industry is run by Merkur and Admiral.
